Western officials first stood by the post, but a day later, announced the image had been removed. This Western University poster, created to support the fight against homophobia, has sparked a backlash from the local Muslim community for including a depiction of two women in hijabs kissing. “It should be made clear that this is not an attack on the LGBT-plus community, and the existence of queer Muslims is acknowledged,” a petition against the poster said. London Muslim leaders said the post was “inappropriate” and “disrespectful” because the hijab, a head scarf that covers a women’s hair for modesty, is connected to their religious practice. The post, titled Celebrate the Power of Love, included an image of several people together – including two women wearing hijabs and about to kiss. The letter, which also is being sent to different faculties, comes the week after a social media post by Western prompted a strong reaction from London’s Muslim community.
